Speech & Language Milestones: Is My Child on Track?

As parents, it's natural to wonder: Is my child developing the way they should? When it comes to speech and language, early milestones help us understand if a child is on track or may need a little support. While every child develops at their own pace, here’s a general guide of what to expect between 12–24 months:

⭐ 12–18 Months

  • Says 5–10 words

  • Understands simple words like “no,” “bye-bye,” or “milk”

  • Points to show you things

  • Follows one-step directions like “get the ball”

⭐ 18–24 Months

  • Vocabulary grows to 50+ words

  • Begins putting two words together: “more juice,” “mommy go”

  • Understands and points to body parts when asked

  • Responds to simple questions (“Where’s your shoe?”)

🚩 When to Reach Out:

  • Not babbling by 12 months

  • Not using words by 18 months

  • Not combining two words by 24 months

  • Difficulty understanding or following directions
