As parents, it's natural to wonder: Is my child developing the way they should? When it comes to speech and language, early milestones help us understand if a child is on track or may need a little support. While every child develops at their own pace, here’s a general guide of what to expect between 12–24 months:
⭐ 12–18 Months
Says 5–10 words
Understands simple words like “no,” “bye-bye,” or “milk”
Points to show you things
Follows one-step directions like “get the ball”
⭐ 18–24 Months
Vocabulary grows to 50+ words
Begins putting two words together: “more juice,” “mommy go”
Understands and points to body parts when asked
Responds to simple questions (“Where’s your shoe?”)
🚩 When to Reach Out:
Not babbling by 12 months
Not using words by 18 months
Not combining two words by 24 months
Difficulty understanding or following directions
