Back-to-School Speech Tips for Parents: Helping Your Child Communicate with Confidence

The start of a new school year is exciting — new teachers, new friends, and new opportunities for growth! But for children working on speech and language skills, the transition back to school can also bring challenges. Whether your child is starting preschool, moving to a new grade, or entering a bigger classroom setting, supporting their communication skills at home can make a big difference in their confidence and success.

At KTC Speech Therapy, we’re sharing our top tips for making the back-to-school season a positive, language-rich experience for your child.

1. Practice Classroom Vocabulary at Home

Before school begins, talk about words your child will hear often — “pencil,” “backpack,” “teacher,” “recess,” “friends.” You can even role-play school routines like lining up, asking for help, or introducing themselves.

Pro tip: Create a “school word wall” at home with pictures and words to help build familiarity and confidence.

2. Strengthen Listening Skills

In the classroom, children need to follow multi-step directions. Practice this at home by giving fun, two- or three-step instructions:“Put the book on the table, then clap your hands” or “Get your shoes, put them by the door, and give me a high-five.”

3. Keep Reading a Daily Habit

Reading together is one of the most powerful ways to build language. Choose back-to-school themed books and talk about the characters’ feelings, the sequence of events, and any new vocabulary.

4. Encourage Social Communication

Back-to-school means new social situations. Help your child practice greetings (“Hi, my name is…”), asking questions (“What’s your favorite game?”), and taking turns during conversations or play.

5. Stay in Touch with Your Child’s Teacher

Your child’s teacher can be a great partner in supporting speech and language goals. Share any strategies your child uses successfully at home, and ask how they’re communicating in class.

Final Thoughts

The back-to-school season is a wonderful opportunity to help your child grow both academically and socially. With small, intentional activities at home, you can boost their confidence and set them up for a successful year.

If you’d like more personalized support, KTC Speech Therapy offers evaluations and individualized speech therapy plans to help children thrive in school and beyond.
