What Is PROMPT?
PROMPT stands for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets. It’s a specialized speech therapy technique that uses gentle touch cues on the face and under the chin to guide the muscles involved in speech. It’s like giving the brain and body a map for how to say sounds correctly.
Instead of simply asking a child to say a word again, a PROMPT-trained therapist physically helps the child feel how their jaw, lips, and tongue should move to produce specific sounds.
Who Benefits From PROMPT?
PROMPT can be helpful for a wide range of speech challenges, including:
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)
Articulation disorders
Motor speech delays
Speech difficulties due to developmental delays or neurological conditions
PROMPT is often used with children who know what they want to say, but struggle to physically say it. It’s also a great option for children who haven’t made progress with traditional speech therapy methods.
Why PROMPT Works
PROMPT is more than just a technique—it’s a whole framework that focuses on:
✅ Motor planning and coordination
✅ Sensory awareness of movement
✅ Social interaction and communication goals
Many families notice that PROMPT helps their child not only make clearer sounds, but also gain confidence in speaking, participating in conversation, and connecting with others.
